Manual SEO reporting eats time every month: logging into tools, exporting data, pasting it into spreadsheets and formatting it for clients or managers. Most of that can run automatically.

n8n is a workflow automation tool that connects apps and APIs. You can self-host it or use n8n’s cloud version, and it’s flexible enough to handle real SEO reporting workflows. Here’s how I approach it.

What the Workflow Does

A basic automated SEO report can:

  1. Run on a schedule, such as every Monday morning
  2. Pull clicks, impressions, CTR and average position from Google Search Console
  3. Pull sessions and conversions from Google Analytics 4
  4. Write the data to Google Sheets
  5. Compare it with the previous period
  6. Send a summary to Slack, Telegram or email

What You’ll Need

  • An n8n instance, either cloud or self-hosted
  • Access to the Google Search Console property and GA4 property
  • A Google Cloud project with the Search Console API and Google Analytics Data API enabled
  • A Google Sheet to store the data

Step 1: Add a Schedule Trigger

Start the workflow with a Schedule Trigger node. Weekly reports usually run early Monday, and monthly reports on the first working day of the month.

Step 2: Pull Search Console Data

Search Console data can be pulled through the Search Analytics API using n8n’s HTTP Request node with Google OAuth2 credentials.

  • Request data for the reporting period, such as the last seven days.
  • Choose dimensions like query, page, country or device.
  • Remember that Search Console data usually lags by a couple of days, so end the date range two or three days before today.

Step 3: Pull GA4 Data

n8n includes a Google Analytics node that can query GA4 reports. Pull sessions from organic search, engaged sessions and key events (conversions) for the same period.

Step 4: Clean and Calculate

Use n8n’s data transformation nodes, or a Code node, to:

  • Rename fields so they’re readable
  • Calculate changes versus the previous period
  • Flag big drops, such as clicks down more than 20% week over week
  • Pick out the top pages and queries that gained or lost the most

Step 5: Write to Google Sheets

Use the Google Sheets node to append each run’s results to a sheet. Over time, this builds a history you can chart or connect to Looker Studio for dashboards.

Step 6: Send the Summary

Finish with a message to wherever your team works:

  • Slack or Telegram for quick internal updates
  • Email for clients or managers
  • Include the key numbers, notable changes and a link to the full sheet

Adding AI Summaries

You can add an AI step using Claude or OpenAI to turn the numbers into a short written summary, such as “Clicks rose 12%, driven mainly by the local SEO guide.” Keep a human review step for anything client-facing. AI summaries are helpful for speed, but they can misread data or overstate changes.

Useful Extras

  • Ranking drop alerts that fire when an important page loses a lot of clicks
  • Uptime and error alerts that check key pages daily
  • Multi-client reporting that loops through a list of properties
  • Content pipelines that take a video upload, transcribe it, draft a blog post and social captions with AI, and send them for review

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to code to use n8n?

Not for simple workflows. Custom calculations and API calls are easier with some technical knowledge, especially for Search Console data.

Is automated reporting accurate?

It uses the same data as the tools themselves. The main things to watch are date ranges, data delays in Search Console and making sure calculations are set up correctly.

Can I automate reports for multiple clients?

Yes. n8n can loop through a list of properties and produce separate reports for each client.
