More people now get answers from AI tools before they click a traditional search result. Google shows AI Overviews for many searches, and tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly, often citing a handful of sources.

If those tools don’t understand your business, you won’t be mentioned. The good news is that most of what helps is solid SEO with a sharper focus on clarity.

Start With a Reality Check

Before optimizing, find out where you stand.

  • Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your customers actually ask, such as “best [service] in [city]” or “how do I fix [problem].”
  • Note whether your business is mentioned, which competitors are, and which sources get cited.
  • Repeat this every month or two. AI answers change often, so track trends rather than single results.

1. Make Sure AI Systems Can Access Your Site

AI tools can only use content they can reach.

  • Check your robots.txt file. Some sites block AI crawlers without realizing it, sometimes through a security plugin or CDN setting.
  • Know the main crawlers: GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler used for model training, while OAI-SearchBot is used for ChatGPT’s search features. PerplexityBot crawls for Perplexity.
  • Google AI Overviews draw on Google’s normal search index, so the most important thing is simply being crawlable and indexed by Googlebot.
  • Blocking AI crawlers is a valid choice for some sites, but it’s a trade-off. Content they can’t access can’t be cited.

2. Strengthen Your Entity Signals

AI systems try to understand entities: businesses, people, places and topics, and how they connect. Make it easy for them to understand yours.

  • Use the same business name, description and contact details everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
  • Write a strong About page that clearly explains who you are, what you do, where you work and why you’re credible.
  • Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • Get mentioned on reputable industry and local sites. Mentions help build recognition even without links.

3. Write Answer-Ready Content

AI tools pull passages that directly answer a question. Structure your content so those answers are easy to find.

  • Use clear, question-based headings that match how people actually ask.
  • Answer the question directly in the first sentence or two under each heading, then expand.
  • Include definitions, steps, comparisons and tables where they genuinely help.
  • Cover a topic thoroughly rather than writing many thin posts on tiny variations.
  • Keep content accurate and up to date, with dates, author information and sources where relevant.

4. Build Topical Authority

Being cited once is luck. Being cited consistently comes from being seen as a strong source on a topic.

  • Create clusters of related content around your core services.
  • Link related articles to each other and to your main service pages.
  • Show real experience: case studies, examples, original data and specific details that generic content lacks.

5. Use Structured Data

Schema markup helps machines understand exactly what your content represents. Useful types include Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article and Person. Validate your markup with Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

6. Don’t Forget Traditional SEO

AI search leans heavily on the same signals as regular search: crawlable pages, clear structure, authority and trustworthy content. Sites with weak technical SEO or thin content rarely get cited. It’s also worth setting up Bing Webmaster Tools, since some AI search tools draw on sources beyond Google.

What About llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed file that summarizes a site’s key content for AI systems. It’s quick to create, but there’s little public evidence so far that major AI tools rely on it. Treat it as optional, not a replacement for the steps above.

How to Measure Progress

  • Track a fixed set of important questions across AI tools over time
  • Watch for referral traffic from AI platforms in Google Analytics
  • Monitor branded searches, which often rise as AI tools mention you more

No one can honestly guarantee that an AI tool will mention your business, because these systems decide for themselves what to cite. What you can do is make your site as clear, credible and citable as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It overlaps heavily. It uses the same foundations but puts more emphasis on entity clarity and content structured for direct answers.

Should I block AI crawlers?

It depends on your goals. Blocking them protects your content from being used, but it can also keep you out of AI answers entirely.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

It varies. Improvements to content and entity signals can take weeks to months to be reflected, and AI answers themselves change frequently.
